We've already established that the frequency of the keyword phrase within the body of the content (keyword density) is an important
attribute of SEO. However, it's just one very small aspect of on-page optimization. The major search engine spiders look for many
different criteria on each webpage in determining relevancy, one of which is a page header. A
page header is nothing more than a
bold-faced line of text that appears above your main content. Page headers are important as they are usually the first thing a search
engine spider sees when indexing your WebPages. For that reason, it's very important that your
header contain your keyword phrase
(preferably ONLY your keyword phrase). Note
that "<" and ">" symbols have been replaced with "[" and "]" so they will render correctly in your browser. When adding your own tags
make sure to replace wrap the tags in "<" and ">". Page headers should appear between the following tag:
- [ H1 ]: Should appear as the top text line on every page and contain the keyword phrase
Staying with our fictional website, the header for our webpage would be "Student Loan Consolidation" and would be wrapped within the [ H1 ] HTML
tags. Note that the size of the H1 may be a bit large at the default setting, so you may want to reduce the font size a little (so it's
not so distracting).
What you're achieving by using the [ H1 ] tag is that you're placing a very
strong emphasis on the keywords. To a
search engine, text that appears within [ H1 ] tags are considered to be relevant text. After all, someone who wraps text in the [ H1 ]
tags obviously wants them to stand out and grab the attention of the user.
